Examples of Furniture that folds or collapses when it is not required.
There are many examples of things that fold from the standard umbrella to the highly complex. The beauty of mechanisms that fold is if they are so simple yet they perform an amazing task. The picture below is of a folding chair which was produced in the 1970/80s by the makers of the first folding baby buggies (Andrews McLaren). These products have been the inspiration for the now very common folding pushchair which you will have all riden in as a child!

You can see from the picture how easy it folds into a ‘umbrella’ which can then be used as a walking stick. It is made from aluminum and nylon fabric, held together with rivets and ‘bell caps’. A very clever design indeed.
If you look at the detailed pictures of the joints you will be able to see how it folds and how it is held together.
